Types of Rotator Cuff Repair Surgeries

If you have a sports or activity-related injury such as a rotator cuff tear, your sports medicine doctor will attempt to treat it first using conservative therapy. In some cases, non-surgical treatments may be successful in relieving the symptoms depending on several factors, including:

  • The size of the tear
  • The type of rotator cuff tear – acute or longstanding
  • The type of sport or activity you participate in
  • Your anatomy
  • The condition of surrounding tissues, tendons, and bones

Unfortunately, in about 50% of cases involving rotator cuff tears, conservative treatments are not enough to completely eliminate the pain and restore proper function.

Depending on your case, your sports medicine doctor may recommend one of the following surgical procedures for rotator cuff tears:

Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair

This is the least invasive surgical procedure. It is performed as an outpatient procedure for small- to medium-sized tears. The doctor makes small cuts to insert a tiny camera and surgical instruments to repair the tendon. This procedure is less painful, allows for faster recovery, and has a lower risk of complications.

Open Rotator Cuff Repair

This procedure requires the doctor to make an open surgical cut over the shoulder, in order to separate the shoulder muscle to access the torn tendon and repair it. This procedure is recommended for large, severe, or complicated tears, including those that require a tendon transfer or reconstruction because the damaged tendon can’t be reattached.

Mini-Open Rotator Cuff Repair

This procedure combines the other two techniques: arthroscopy is used to assess the injury, remove loose cartilage, and trim away bone spurs; and then small incisions are used to provide direct visual access to mend the tear. This procedure is less invasive compared to open repair, and is recommended for patients with multiple torn rotator cuff tendons.

Final Note

Keep in mind that surgery is usually a last resort, and is mainly aimed at reducing shoulder pain. Restoring shoulder function is a secondary goal. Please visit your sports medicine doctor to discuss the best rotator cuff surgery for your case.
